Staff Council is a University of Arizona organization whose members are Classified Staff and University Staff from all University of Arizona campuses who volunteer to represent staff from their college or unit, and staff as a whole, in campus shared governance. Staff participation in University Shared Governance has a long history on this campus. Staff Council has an organized structure of officers and committees, and meets monthly.
Staff Council’s specific activities are reviewed each year to support the Council’s important goals of:
- Favorably influencing upper senior administration;
- Maximizing staff visibility on campus;
- Providing staff representation to more than 20 campus committees;
- Supporting the University Awards for Excellence and other employee recognition events;
- Promoting staff professional development by organizing the annual Crossroads conference and providing other professional development opportunities throughout the year
Staff Council is continually working to enhance the University workplace. We provide guidelines for regular annual performance reviews, and we continue to work for optimal and flexible working conditions for all staff. Staff Council strives to bring recognition of the value staff contribute to the mission and objectives of the University of Arizona. Watch for updates to our goals and priorities on our website.
Staff Council represents all Classified Staff and University Staff, as well as appointed professionals not represented through Faculty Senate. We do not officially represent postdoctoral fellows but welcome their participation.
Staff hold a wide range of positions that are critical to the mission of the University of Arizona. From information architects to theatre technicians, from artificial intelligence programmers to bioethicists, groundskeepers to accountants, staff fill roles within the university community that require advanced skill sets, practical experience and/or degree requirements, and specialized knowledge.
The diverse talents of these uniquely skilled individuals reflect the richness and complexity of the university community and embody its commitment to engagement, access and quality.
Classified Staff or University Staff who are willing to represent their units, colleges or departments and commit to regular and meaningful participation in Staff Council are welcome as members.
Meetings and events are open to all Classified and University Staff from all University of Arizona campuses.
At the University of Arizona, employees have the chance to participate in campus decision making through shared governance, a tradition that a former leader, President Robert N. Shelton, has said is essential for a strong university.
"It is fundamental to the success, it is part and parcel of what has built this University of Arizona into a great academic institution," he said in an interview.
Members of the governance groups at the university – the Faculty Senate, the Staff Council, the Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC), and the Associated Students of University of Arizona (ASUA) – share their expertise, opinions and concerns with upper-level administrators to help guide university planning and policy decisions. Employees from all areas of campus are invited to participate in shared governance through these groups.
